In an effort to reach out to younger members of the community, Catawba County United Way established a Youth Council in 2002. The mission of the Youth Council is to increase awareness and involvement among our youth concerning community service activities in order to cultivate future volunteers and philanthropists. Today, the United Way Youth Council is composed of two students from each high school in the county, and this group has been working hard to fulfill this ambitious mission.
A key component of the Youth Council's plan is a budget and allocations process that we call "Youth Building Communities." This process involves the establishment of a student budget and allocations panel that will make small grants to member United Way agencies. It's the belief of the Youth Council that this direct participation by students will provide the perfect opportunity for them to learn about community needs while feeling the gratification associated with helping others.
Their role will be to evaluate grant applications by local non-profits; to hear presentations by these non-profits; and ultimately, to make grant decisions. The council will also help initiate student activities for the betterment of their community in their own schools.
The Youth Council is an excellent way to educate our youth regarding the importance of community service and philanthropy, please call 828-327-6851 if you would like to recommend a rising junior or senior for the Youth Council.
A special thanks to Stephen Shuford of Shurtape Technologies. Stephen's leadership over the past few years has helped the Youth Council build a strong foundation for future growth.
