2026 Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week

"Thank God we had someone who was there for us, to take us in and to not just abandon us," Victoria Watkins.

"When I wanted to become sober, that was hard because I wanted to get back into society, but I'm so far below to where it just takes little steps, but you got to want to do it," Joe Yarak.

Unless you've faced the same challenges, it's difficult to understand what individuals and families in crisis experience every day – the decisions they must make, and the fears and frustrations they feel.

Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week (HHAW) is an annual program where communities come together across the country to draw attention to the problems related to these issues.

To underscore HHAW Week, Nov. 15 - 21, the Catawba County Housing Visions Continuum of Care group is hosting a community event, "Stories of Hope". This will be a chance to hear from individuals who made the journey out of crisis and back into a home and a stable life.

  • Thursday, Nov. 19
  • Starts at 6 p.m.
  • Location: Hickory Soup Kitchen (110 2nd St Pl SE, Hickory, NC 28602)

If you’d like to attend please RSVP by Nov. 16 – Register below. For more information contact John Bailey at the Catawba County United Way – jbailey@ccunitedway.com or 828-327-6851.

And look for more activities throughout the week, including the chance to sponsor a HHAW Pinwheel Garden and a community reflection event to close out the week.
