Getting to know local non-profit leaders - Partnership for Children

April 14, 2022

Over the next few weeks, the Catawba County United Way will be highlighting the executive and program directors of the CCUW's funded partner agencies for 2022. Every year, the CCUW looks to partner with local non-profits and help support their programs focused on improving the lives of those in need in the areas of education, financial stability and health.

This week Kim Holden - Executive Director Partnership for Children.

1. How long have you been with your agency and have worked with non-profits overall?

I started my career at Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center at UNC-Chapel Hill and moved to Catawba County to be the Executive Director of the Rape Crisis Center in 1996. I started my tenure as Executive Director of the Catawba County Partnership for Children in 1998.

2. What drew you to your current position and this kind of work?

I come from a family of educators, and I care deeply about all children having access to high quality educational opportunities, starting at birth. The Catawba County Partnership for Children is the place where all of that begins!  It’s exciting, dynamic, and life-changing work – and I love being a part of it.

3. What is the impact of your agency in our community?

CCPC really serves as our county’s early childhood hub – providing services to make sure that children have what they need in their first 2000 days of life – when an incredible amount of brain development happens! We’re proud of the work we do, and even more proud of the amazing partners who work with us to get it all done.

4. What does a good day at work look like?

A good day here includes families coming through our doors for resources like free pre-k, free Imagination Library books, free diapers, and free parenting classes. We love hearing children play in the lobby and working with families to get them connected to whatever services they need.

5. The non-profit world can be stressful. What’s your favorite way to relax?

I love spending time with my incredible family (husband Paul, two daughters, four stepsons and a one-eyed Bichon named Barney), taking walks, and singing with my church choir and with a trio called TriVocal.

6. Do you have a favorite book/movie and why?

As a big fan of Imagination Library, I have to choose one of those books!  “Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon” (by Patty Lovell) is a fantastic book about loving who you are – and celebrating everything that makes you special.
