emergency shelter training

The American Red Cross and United Way of Catawba County are partnering to offer a two‑day Community Shelter Operations Training designed to equip local residents with the skills and confidence to support their neighbors during emergencies.

This course prepares community members to set up and operate shelters for disasters, severe weather (similar to the recent warming sites needed this past winter), and other unexpected events where people may need a safe place to stay.

Day 1 (May 29): Shelter Fundamentals - at the United Way office in Hickory: Participants will learn the core principles of running a welcoming, compassionate, and well‑organized shelter. This includes how to greet and support clients, create a safe and comfortable environment for individuals and families, coordinate feeding operations, and understand the daily rhythms of shelter life. The class also covers considerations for accommodating pets, maintaining safety, and ensuring dignity for everyone who walks through the door.

Day 2 (May 30): Hands‑On Shelter Simulation - at Christ Lutheran Church in Hickory: The second day brings the learning to life. Participants will physically set up a mock shelter, arranging spaces, organizing supplies, establishing functional areas, and practicing the workflow of opening, operating, and closing a shelter. This hands‑on experience helps community members feel prepared to take action when a real need arises.

The goal of this training is simple: to empower communities to take care of their own. By learning how shelters operate and gaining practical experience, participants will leave feeling confident in their ability to support friends, neighbors, and the broader community during times of crisis. This course strengthens local resilience and helps ensure that when challenges arise, our communities are ready to respond with compassion and capability.
